Norco, Louisiana

NORCO -- We really are an acronym. The New Orleans Refining Company. NO.R.Co.

Once Louisiana plantation land,  the New Orleans Refining Company purchased 460 acres of Sellers Plantation in 1920 to build what was first an asphalt refinery. Shell took over in 1928 and began refining oil. The town gradually grew up around the plant and once was home to many stores, a movie theater, a bowling alley, swimming pool, tennis courts and even a golf course.  In 1925, postmistress Lillie Schexnaydre Vaughn and plant manager Charles Melancon took the acronym and formed the name Norco. The town, formerly Sellers, LA, was officially named Norco in 1934.

The Bonnet Carre Spillway, a 7,000-foot wide flood control system operated and managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was begun in 1929 and completed in 1932.
